If you’re a freelancer or running your own business, there is an upside and downside to working from home. It allows you a certain amount of freedom, but doesn’t always guarantee maximal productivity. And what if you’re traveling, or have to meet with a client or partner? The solution might be to avoid Starbucks and check out a co-working space.

What is, essentially, rentable office space can change the way you work and do business. From just a desk to an entire conference room, from one day to weeks at a time, co-working spaces offer flexibility and convenience, and they’re popping up everywhere.

Check out co-working’s very own wiki. It’s directory provides an ever-growing list of co-working spaces around the world. They even offer a Coworking Visa that allows active members of one space, when traveling, to use another co-working space, free of charge. The wiki also lists co-working events, connects you with other co-workers and provides links to abundant resources for anyone looking for a non-traditional approach to working outside of the office.

A blog from the Wall Street Journal highlights short-term vacation-rental services for co-working space. According to the article,“It’s where coworking meets Airbnb.” One such service, LiquidSpace, allows users to book available desks in hotels, libraries and private companies. Mark Gilbreath, LiquidSpace’s founder and CEO says “There is so much underutilized real estate in the footprints of most corporations. They are hungry to put those assets to work.”

So if your current office involves your kitchen table, a lap-top, and a cell phone, consider checking out a co-working space near you.
